Health Screening for UTAG and GAUA Members

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UCC), in collaboration with the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA-UCC), and the �� Health Services, has organized a week-long health screening programme for all Senior Members in the University. The programme was intended to form a medical opinion of the health status of UTAG and GAUA members.

The president of UTAG-UCC, Dr. Samuel Bert Boadi-Kusi, explained that UTAG-��had observed that many Senior Members had hectic schedules, leaving them with limited time to avail themselves to thorough medical examinations at the University’s health facility. “We brought together a team to take their samples and run vital laboratory tests that will help our medical doctors to form an impression on each of our members”, he said.

Dr. Boadi-Kusi indicated that when the results of the laboratory tests are ready, members would be referred to doctors from both the ��Hospital and the School of Medical Sciences for further discussion on their health status. “Based on the results, we expect that key interventions will be put in place to help prevent health conditions that are preventable and provide treatment for other ailments”, he noted.

He encouraged his colleagues to avail themselves and participate in the health screening initiative. He also called on University Management to support and collaborate with the Unions to hold the Health Screening programme yearly.

Dr. (Mrs.) Eunice Fay Amissah, Vice-President of UTAG-UCC, entreated all members to take advantage of the exercise to know their health status. She said the health screenings included lipid profiling, full blood count, liver and kidney function tests, breast screening, pap test for women, and prostrate test for men.

In an interview with Mr. Eric Agyenim-Boateng, an Accountant at the Directorate of Finance, he said, “I have not taken these tests since last year, but today, I received some education regarding my health and I would like to see the University take up this initiative and have it conducted more often”.

School of Nursing and Midwifery Welcomes GVSU Students to ��Campus

The School of Nursing and Midwifery has held a ceremony to welcome the seventh batch of nursing students from Grand Valley State University (GVSU), USA, for the 2019 Study Abroad in Ghana.

Welcome Address

Welcoming the GVSU students, the College Registrar for College of Health and Allied Sciences, Mr. Joseph Gordon Mensah, expressed the College’s readiness to receive the team and assured them of the University’s maximum support to make their stay on ��campus a success. He also entreated them to feel comfortable and be involved in activities outlined for the programme in Ghana so that they could experience the health system in Ghana to enhance their knowledge in the Nursing profession.

Appreciation to UCC

The leader of the GVSU team, Prof. Sylvia Mupeppi, thanked the University for the warm reception and making them feel at home. She indicated that the team was made up of senior and junior year students who were passionate about global health relations. Prof. Mupeppi noted that the world was now a global village and the health challenges that existed in Ghana were similar to that of the USA and other countries in the world. She said the students were eager to know how Ghana managed her healthcare systems with very limited resources compared to the USA. Prof. Mupeppi was appreciative of the energy that the School of Nursing had invested to make their stay on ��a fulfilling one.

��GVSU Collaboration

Speaking on UCC’s relationship with GVSU, the Dean of the Centre for International Education (CIE), Prof. Rosemond Boohene, noted that the University has been in partnership with GVSU for over 10 years now adding that “GVSU is UCC’s best international partners “.

A Principal Programmes Assistant at CIE, Mr. Isaac Eshun, gave an overview of CIE’s services to international students including facilitating faculty, staff and students exchange programmes, international workshops and seminars, accommodation for exchange students and assisting ��students for exchange programmes outside Ghana.

The programme was attended by the Dean of School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr. Dorcas Obiri-Yeboah, some Heads of Department, lecturers, staff, and students.

A drop of your blood will be drawn onto a glucose test strip and placed in a glucometer for the reading which will be recorded. This is a normal check for your blood pressure both manually and digitally.

Blood Grouping

Blood grouping will be done to determine which of the blood group A, B, AB and O, together with the Rhesus factor (+) or (-). For body fat analysis, you stand on a machine and your anthropometric readings will be ascertained. Females will be screened for any suspicious lumps in an ambulance at the site using the latest technological instrument "the Breast-I"

You finally take this to the doctor for consultation and he/she will assess your cardiovascular risk.
