黑料社 - Sport /tags/sport en 黑料社Sports Team Presents GUSA Games Trophies to Management /news/ucc-sports-team-presents-gusa-games-trophies-management <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p> The Sports Team has presented trophies the team won at the 26th Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games held at the University of Ghana from January 3 to 19, 2020 to the Vice-Chancellor and Management team</p> <p> UCC聽 Sports team emerged overall champions with a total of 64 medals consisting of 28 gold, 23 silver, and 13 bronze at the Games.</p> <h2> 黑料社Champions of GUSA Games since 2012</h2> <p> Briefing the Vice-Chancellor, Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, and other members of Management of the University, the Chairman of the Sports and Recreation Committee, Dr. Charles Domfeh, noted that the team had been crowned champions of both mini and main GUSA Games since 2012 up to date. 鈥淲e have now completed the cycle of winning both the mini and main GUSA Games in all the member Universities from 2012鈥 he indicated.</p> <p> Dr. Domfeh appealed to Management to invest in sports infrastructure and management of Sportsmen and women. He called for a policy to help the University to realise enough Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to support sports activities in the University. 鈥淚f we are able to develop sports infrastructure such as Astro Turf we can generate money for the University by charging other institutions or individuals that want to organise competitions or events there,鈥 he noted. He further announced that 鈥淭wo of our students are playing in the American Major League and if we had managed them well we could have been rewarded for these two players鈥.</p> <p> Dr. Domfeh was grateful to Management for the continuous support over the years and indicated that 鈥渢his has propelled us to win all these laurels for the University鈥.聽</p> <h3> 黑料社Sports Team Has Made us Proud</h3> <p> The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora Edu-Buandoh, who led the team to the GUSA Games in Legon, said a recommendation had been made to Management to upgrade the Sports Section to a Directorate in order to put in place the required structures to promote sports activities in the University. She congratulated the team on the feat it had achieved saying 鈥淵ou have done well by making 黑料社visible again through Sports鈥. 聽 She commended the coaches for the passion with which they worked, especially lecturers who volunteered to take up responsibility for some of the disciplines.</p> <p> On his part, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, congratulated members of the team and assured them of Management鈥檚 continuous support. He noted that 黑料社was not only excelling academically, but was also making headlines through sports.聽</p> <h3> Celebration of Success</h3> <p> Prof. Ampiah promised that the University would organise a special event to recognise and celebrate the successes of the team. 鈥淲e need to celebrate this achievement in a grand style and also invite other institutions from Cape Coast to take inspiration from our team,鈥 he added.</p> <p> Present at the meeting were the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dora F. KNUST won聽bronze in tennis while UNER secured 聽bronze medal in the athletics discipline.</p> <p> The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) University of Professional Studies (UPSA), University of Health and Allied Science (UHAS), debutants Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) and Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) have all won nothing yet.</p> <p> Nine sporting disciplines remain for schools to fight for medals. For the Middle Zone, the games were held in Kumasi with participating teams from the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and Eastern Regions whereas the Northern Zone which took place at Tamale comprised Distance Students from Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions.</p> <p>Upper East Region won the games for the Northern Zone. Due to heavy downpour, the Middle Zone games could not end successfully for a winner to be determined.</p> <p>They competed in athletics, volley ball and soccer.</p> <p>Opening the competition in the Southern Zone, the Coordinator of the Students Support Services Unit of the College of Distance Education (CoDE), Dr. Felix Kumedzro, commended DESAG executives both national and regional, past and present for sustaining the games for the past four years. 鈥淵ou have worked together with your students and the College Management to create a vibrant and meaningful sporting platform, on which our distance students build their character and strive towards their sporting aspirations鈥 he noted.</p> <p>鈥淭he United Nations Human Rights and Sport for Development and Peace Framework states that the practice of education and sport is a fundamental right for all鈥 he said. He explained that it articulated the right-based approach in sport and recreation including physical activity and leisure which have been present in the sport and recreation discourse since the founding of the United Nations that was preceded by the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights that endorsed a framework of rights and duties. 鈥淓veryone student has the right to rest and leisure鈥nd that鈥ducation shall be directed to the full development of the human personality鈥nd everyone has the right to freely participate in the sporting life of the community,鈥 he indicated.</p> <p>Dr. Kumedzro said sport was a vehicle for youth development and empowerment, especially for boys and girls adding that 鈥淚t is a tool for social integration and empowerment through tailored programmes. It teaches students values and shapes their attitudes, such as to respect the rules of the sport and the game officials, and sportsmanship鈥. In that regard, he noted that the role of the University Management particularly, the departments involved in sports and recreation were of pivotal importance.</p> <p>Dr. Kumedzro who is also the Patron of DESAG, called on the Ghana Education Service to consider integrating other disciplines such as swimming. He expressed worry that the inter-school sports championships was only limited to athletics, volleyball, and football. 鈥淲e should incorporate other sporting areas such as swimming to expose our students to other sporting skills,鈥 he advised. According to him, 鈥渢his will go a long way to equip our students to other sporting skills鈥.聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽</p> <p>The National President of DESAG, Mr.George Amenyo, expressed gratitude to the Sports Committee and other executives of the Association for the team spirit which ensured that the games were properly planned. He said the annual games served as a great opportunity to unearth talents of Distance Students as well as identifying good players to join the University鈥檚 main team for both national and international tournaments. 鈥淭he games allow us to socialise and build network among ourselves and we strongly believe in our slogan that distance is not a barrier to education and anything in life,鈥 he stressed.</p> <p>Mr. Amenyo appealed to the players and athletes to abide by the rules of the games and reminded the supporters to comport themselves without resorting to any act that would destroy the beauty of the games. The competition is on the theme 鈥淯niversity Sports, a Unifier for Post-Election Ghana鈥.</p> <p>The competition which is organised every two years has athletes from eight public universities compete in the following disciplines; Basketball (Male), Football and Goal ball (Male and Female), Netball (female), Table Tennis (Male and Female) and Tennis (Male and Female).</p> <p>Competing Universities for the Games include the 黑料社 (UCC), University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University for Development Studies (UPSA). Others are the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), University for Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS).</p> <p>Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, said the theme for the games should serve as a reminder that the peace institutions like the Universities and for that matter Ghanaians were enjoying should be paramount in all our endeavours. 聽鈥淭his same peace is expected to manifest in the various disciplines for all to emulate鈥, he admonished the team players and officials.</p> <p>The Vice-Chancellor noted that a good student should be able to excel in both academics and sports, adding that 鈥渁ll the sports women and men here are potential best students in your various institutions because you are combining sports and academics鈥. He urged the students from the eight institutions to use the opportunity to interact and exchange ideas that could earn them success in their future endeavours. He further told them to demonstrate unity in the games because 鈥渨e all belong to the same constituency and this constituency is not our respective universities but Ghana as a whole.</p> <p>Prof. Ampiah commended the entire student body, especially the Local Organising Committee (LOC), for working very hard to ensure the successful organisation of the games despite the short notice and also expressed gratitude to the Sports Council for releasing the New Cape Coast Stadium for the games. He wished all the competing universities success in the games.</p> <p>The President of GUSA, Prof. Joseph Oga, thanked 黑料社for hosting the 7th Mini-GUSA and also facilitating the securing the New Cape Coat Stadium for the games. The 10-day competition is under the distinguished patronage of the Vice-Chancellor of the 黑料社, Prof. Joseph Ghartey Ampiah.</p> <p>Participating Universities include the 黑料社, University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University for Development Studies(UDS). Others are the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), University of Energy and Natural Resources(UENR). and the University of Health and Allied Sciences(UHAS).</p> <p>Currently, all participating Universities and officials for the games have arrived at 黑料社for registration and accreditation. In all about 270 students have been registered with 800 officials. The multipurpose Sports Building which serves as the Games Secretariat has been well equipped with the necessary logistics. Accreditation cards have been produced officials and the various team members of the participating universities.</p> <p>In an interview, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Prof. George K. T. Oduro, gave the assurance that all the necessary preparations have been done to ensure a successful organisation of the Mini-GUSA Games. He expressed confidence that the 7th edition of the Mini-GUSA which was being hosted by 黑料社would be on record as one of the best in the history of the games. He called on the University Community and the general public to be present at the Cape Coast Stadium to witness the games.</p> <p>Prof. Oduro advised the participating teams and the officials to observe the rules of the respective games to bring out the beauty of the competition.
